Overview and Rationale

This special issue of Cell Therapy & Engineering Connect will spotlight cutting-edge  advances in the integration of biosensors with organ-on-a-chip (OoC) technologies to better model dynamic cellular microenvironments and tissue functions and sensor-guided control of microenvironments. Sensor-integrated OoC platforms are redefining how we assess physiological responses in real time, enabling unprecedented resolution in disease modeling, drug screening, and regenerative medicine. The issue aims to gather contributions from interdisciplinary researchers working at the interface of  tissue engineering, biosensing, microfluidics, and computational biology.

Topics of interest:

  • Development of electrochemical, optical, and mechanical biosensors for integration with OoC systems
  • Real-time sensing of metabolites, cytokines, oxygen, and pH in OoC systems
  • Integration of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning for sensor data analysis and predictive modeling
  • Sensor-guided control of microenvironments in cell therapy applications
  • Applications in disease modeling, toxicology, and precision medicine using sensor-integrated platforms
  • Scalable manufacturing and standardization of sensorized OoC technologies
  • Multi-organ and body-on-a-chip platforms with embedded biosensing systems
